Magic Veins…
Ancient Egyptians taught that the third finger of the left hand contained a ‘magical vein’ (vena amoris) that led straight to the heart. It is from this early belief that the tradition of wearing a wedding or engagement ring on the third finger of the left hand was born.
Obviously not everyone shares this particular vascular feature, but it is interesting how a vast majority of people do to some extent have a similar vein in a similar location within their left hand… including myself!
Having this ‘magic vein’ does not guarantee a ring, nor does its absence preclude one. But…
Aren’t veins fascinating???
My hand, embroidered
@ the Textiles Museum, there was a participatory art installation. You use yarns and threads on a canvas to portray scars and wounds. This is my left hand, embroidered in crochet thread and depicting the scar on my ring finger from when I slammed my engagement ring into a doorknob.
This is a happy scar.
